Our Lady of the Lake College Training Center is an American Heart Association authorized Training Center.  This training center offers American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care courses to healthcare professionals and the general public. 

Our Lady of the Lake College Training Center provides quality assurance and support to its aligned AHA instructors and Training Sites.

BLS for Healthcare Providers (Basic Life Support)

BLS is a Basic Life Support course designed to teach healthcare professionals recognition of life-threatening emergencies, the skills to provide CPR to victims of all ages, use of automated external defibrillator (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO).  The goal of this course is to train participants to save lives through high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

ACLS is an advanced course for healthcare professionals who respond to cardiovascular emergencies in and out of the hospital setting.  This course will enhance the knowledge and skills of the participants in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary arrest, acute arrhythmia, stroke and acute coronary syndromes (ACS) in adults.  The goal of ACLS is to improve outcomes of cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies in adults. 

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

PALS is a pediatric-focused course for healthcare professionals who treat cardiovascular emergencies in infants, children and adolescents.  The course is designed to enhance the participant’s skills in the evaluation and management of an infant or child with respiratory compromise, circulatory compromise or cardiac arrest.  The goal of PALS is to improve outcomes by improving quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children. 

Instructor Courses:

Instructor courses are designed to teach instructor candidates the methods needed to effectively instruct others in AHA ECC courses.  All courses are taught according to the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

AHA Instructor course prerequisites:

  • Must have a current Provider card in the discipline you wish to teach
  • Be accepted by an AHA Training Center prior to registering for the course
  • Have completed an Instructor Candidate Application
  • Complete the discipline specific online AHA Essentials Course
  • Be proficient in all of the skills of the discipline specific course
  • ACLS and PALS Instructor candidates must be licensed or certified in a healthcare occupation where the skills are within the provider’s scope of practice
